Arizona - Tucson Area

The Tuscon Area lies along the Santa Cruz River on a hilly plain of the Sonoran Desert in a valley with four mountain ranges. The area has the world's largest concentration of Saguaro cactus and boasts a distinctive southwestern look where the feeling of the Old West remains. The area enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine each year. Its dry, sunny climate and desert locale have made it a popular tourist, health resort and retirement area. In the early 1900’s, Tucson began marketing itself as a sunshine city, attracting thousands of tuberculosis victims seeking a cure in its dry climate.

Among the area’s many points of interest are the “Old Adobe” (1868), Colossal Cave, Fort Lowell (reconstructed and now a museum), the beautiful San Xavier Mission (present building erected 1783–97), Tucson Mountain Park with “Old Tucson Studios” (a movie-set replica), the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Pima Air & Space Museum and Saguaro National Park. Colossal Cave is one of the largest dry caverns in the world. Explorers have yet to find its end. Pima Air & Space Museum is the largest privately funded air museum in the world.

Nearby military installations are the large Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and U.S. Fort Huachuca, an army electronic proving ground, with strategic communications headquarters and an intelligence school.
