St. Petersburg, Florida is a fishing and golf retirement community known as the “Sunshine City”.
St. Petersburg FL History
In 1875, General John Williams bought 2,500 acres of land on Tampa Bay to develop a new town. In 1888, Peter Demens, a noble Russian aristocrat, brought the Orange Belt Railway to the community. Demens named the town after his birthplace, St. Petersburg, Russia. The town incorporated in 1892.
In 1914, the St. Louis Browns moved their spring training to St. Petersburg. Also that year, Tony Jannus flew his Benoist airplane across Tampa Bay in 23 minutes. The event is commonly considered the birth of commercial aviation.
Although St. Petersburg was located on the edge of Tampa Bay, the city was not an immediate success as a commercial port because its harbors were too shallow. In 1914, the channel was dredged to open a new channel to the harbor. In May 1921, new docks were completed and the Salt Creek was opened to navigation by large boats. In 1924, the Coast Guard built a base at Bayboro Harbor as an anti-bootlegging site. Abandoned in 1933, it was later re-opened as a training base for World War II troops. St. Petersburg also had a major technical services training center for the Army Air Corps. More than 100,000 men were trained in the St. Petersburg area for the war effort.
